Activities

3. Activities

The Royal Academy of Valencian Culture carries out many different activities during the year, not only in Valencia, but also outside of Valencian territory. These and other related subjects can be consulted at the web page www.racv.es

  • 3.1.- Opening and Closing Ceremony of the Academic Course.

It is traditional for the RAVC to celebrate the opening of the academic year with a solemn speech of a Full Member Academician on his field of study.

Normally this speech takes place at the Marine Consulate Hall of the Silk Market of Valencia, but with the purpose of reaching out towards the people in other towns, sometimes it has been held in different Valencian towns or cities.

The same applies to the closing ceremony.

  • 3.2.- Day of the Valencian Culture and Language .

Every March 3rd , the Royal Academy commemorates the death in 1397 of the greatest poet in Valencian language – Ausias March. The commemoration is two fold. One, in the Cathedral of Valencia, with a flower tribute and a prayer said next to the poet’s grave. Two, an act in the Music Palace of Valencia in which several new publications are presented, lectures on the Valencia language and a speech of exaltation of the Valencian language.

The RACV grants the “Jaime Roig” prize for the research work on linguistic matters.

  • 3.3.- Lectures and Exhibitions.

One of the activities developed by the RAVC is the organisation of all kinds of lecures about the Valencian culture, either on current affairs or as a series on a single subject. The Assembly Hall of the Academic Institution is usually where these activities take place, but lectures can also be held in other Valencian and Spanish cities. It is a tradition to organise a series of lectures on Valencian subjects in Madrid, the capital of Spain.

The headquarters of the RAVC can also used by other entities for their activities, since the RAVC is an important reference in the Valencian cultural and associative world.

Thus, the RAVC Assembly Hall is always busy, not only thanks to its own programmes but also to those carried out by other organisations on historical, cultural or bibliographical aspects of Valencia.

  • 3.4.- School of Valencian Studies

One of the lastest activities created by the RAVC is the School of Valencian Studies. Pupils enrolled in it delve in the history of Valencia, its people, its art, genealogy and heraldry, etc. Classes are held in the Assembly Hall and include guided visits to monuments and areas of interest.

  • 3.5.- Fires nacionals i internacionals.

    • 3.5.1- Expolingua.

Expolingua is the European international fair devoted to languages. The RAVC has been representing the Valencian language at its stand there for many years. The latest publications and projects and the most representative examples of its publishing funds on .linguistic subjects are presented here.

The cultural and scientific exchange among the specialists in Europe is one of the immediate consequences of the RACV’s participation in this fair.

The RAVC is present in Expolingua in the Madrid, Berlin and Lisboa editions.

    • 3.5.2- Valencian Book Fair.

The Royal Academy of Valencian Culture started the Valencia Book Fair to achieve awareness of the publications in Valencian language, promoting and exhibiting the bibliographic production of Valencian Publishing Houses and Editors
This Book Fair which started in 1996 is completed and complemented with a series of parallel activities, such as book presentations, readings, round tables and poetry readings, etc. Today the Valencian Language Book Fair is an “must” for the publishing and editorial firms dealing with the Valencian language and Valencian subjects.

    • 3.5.3.- Humanities and Science Valencian Lecture Hall (Aula).

Among other activities, the Royal Academy of Valencian Culture organises seminars. In them specific subjects are dealt with in a more detailed manner by technicians and specialists. These seminars are open to the general public who have previously registered for them. They are organised by the Humanities and Science Valencia Lecture Hall in Gandia and they deal with Cave art, Iberian Language and Valencian language. There is also a history and Valencian language course.

    • 3.5.4.- International Seminar on Minority Languages.

Every 2 years the RAVC organises the International Seminar on Minority Languages in Europe, with the presence of many European specialists who explain in their speeches or reports the situation, problems and projects of the different minority languages. This Seminar is held at the Congress Hall of Valencia, which is fully equipped with an advanced infrastructure (simultaneous translations, projections , etc.).

    • 3.5.5.- Expojove.

In spite of its scientific character, The Royal Academy of Valencian Culture has also tried to approach young people inviting them to learn more about their history, language and culture.

In Expojove, the fair for children and teen-agers, organised each year by the City Council, the RAVC has a stand through which it develops activities for young people. It is a successful attempt to make young people aware of their culture, that of Valencia.
